COMMITMENT: Arizona lands three-star WR

Arizona lands a three-star WR for the 2026 class in Caleb Smith out Allen, Texas, who made his decision on Twitter.

Smith picked the Wildcats over offers from Arkansas and Baylor.

Bobby Wade and the staff are really excited about this commitment and the fact that it strengthens their footing in Texas.

Transfer Update No. 3

This one comes to somewhat of a surprise as Arizona forward Henri Veesaar has entered the portal becoming the third player to leave the program. Veesaar had a breakout season averaging 9.4 points, 5 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 blocks while shooting 59% from the field.

In the NCAA Tournament Veesaar helped the Wildcats get to the Sweet Sixteen and in the three games scored 24 points while collecting 15 rebounds and four assists.

It was thought that Veesaar would be a critical piece to the 2025-26 roster but it looks like plans have changed and Arizona will be losing a player to the portal in this time of an unpredictable transfer era.

I think this is a single that Veesaar probably know where he is going and has been offered an NIL package that Arizona isn't willing to match at this time. It could be a sign of thing to come regarding Carter Bryant as well.

Transfer Update No. 2

Arizona basketball will have some roster turnover as KJ Lewis has already entered the portal and now center Emmanuel Stephen has made the decision to become the second Wildcat to enter the portal and leave the program. This past season, Stephen played in eight games averaging 2.9 minutes and scored 1.3 points per game while going 5-for-5 from the field.

Out of high school, Stephen was a four-star recruit that chose the Wildcats over offers from Arizona State, Kansas, LSU and Miami as the 102 ranked recruit nationally.

The plan Tommy Lloyd and his coaching staff had for Stephen was to red shirt the 7-foot center and get him ready for college basketball the following year. However, an injury to Motiejus Krivas changed the plans and so did the desire to play forced Lloyd and his staff not to use the redshirt and play him in eight games this season.

Stephen is a very raw prospect that will need developing in order to see any significant playing time in D1 basketball. I could see him going to programs like St. Mary's, San Francisco, New Mexico or any program not in a Power 4 conference.

Transfer Update

Arizona guard KJ Lewis has entered the transfer portal. This past season, Lewis had his highs and lows and found himself as an energy guy and defensive master mind off the bench for Tommy Lloyd.

Lewis averaged 10.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists while shooting 42% from the field. He struggled from the 3-point line connecting on 19% of his 69 attempts. That was a 16% decrease from the previous seasons.

Coming out of high school, Lewis was recruited by Texas Tech, Houston, Baylor and SMU before picking Arizona.

I expect Lewis to gain interest from Houston, Texas Tech, UCLA and Baylor. There is a high chance Arizona will face him one, or twice next season if he is of high interest from those schools.

It is gameday for Arizona as it takes on top-seeded Duke with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line.

Arizona and Duke faced off very early in the season in Tucson with the Blue Devils prevailing 69-55. Both teams are much different heading into Thursday since that first meeting in November.

Spring ball observations (offense)

Hello guys, sorry for not getting this up here quicker. However, this spring is very different from previous seasons with new faces on the roster and on the coaching staff after the first year of the Brent Brennan era. With that comes a lot of time spent installing the new offensive system and defensive scheme. So, most of the time has been spent getting through those working pains and getting guys on and off of the field to get them reps.

However, there have been a few interesting things when it comes to the offensive side of the ball. I'll break down my three top takes from this point on offense below.

Offensive tempo

When taking the offensive coordinating job, Seth Doege was automatically labeled as an air-raid coach, given his time playing for Mike Leach and learning that system from Licon Riley and Graham Harrell.

However, when you look at his time at Marshall, the Thundering Herd his offenses were well-balanced and finished the season at No. 20 nationally in rushing.

Yes, there will be some air-raid concepts in Doege's scheme. But, I think we will be looking at more of a Rich Rodriguez style than a Leach style of play.

Center position issues

Over the last several years, Arizona has been solid at the center position, with Josh Baker handling the middle. But now, Baker has graduated and that has left at whole at the center spot.

In camp, Arizona has went with Grayson Stovall in the starting role and Ka'ena DeCambra as the backup.

Both players have had their issues and one of those issues has been getting the ball back to the QB on target.

There is plenty of time to sort out these issues. But, right now the center position isn't a solid spot for the Wildcats.

QB depth

One of the main things that has stood out early to me is the depth of the quarterback position compared to last year. Last season, Arizona had Noah Fifita and that was about it with walk-on Cole Tannenbaum being the main backup. Fifita was the only option and there wasn't much behind him.

Now, Arizona has added transfer Braedyn Locke to the group and freshmen Sawyer Anderson and Luke Haugo, the depth has been improved.

Fifita will be the starting quarterback without question. However, now you have guys behind him that can take the field in a break glass situation.

What is a great rate of return?

As I review my Goazcats football recruitment board every day to see if there are any new commits and/or visits, it makes me wonder, is there a metric or standard percentage considered good in terms of the rate of visits turned verbal commits? Putting it in the simplest terms there appears to be lots of steps in the commitment process. 1) The university football team's staff identifying possible recruits; 2) contact made and multiple visits/communication exchanges; 3) offers made to recruits; 4) invitations to visit; 5) the actual visit; 6) continued communication exchanges for those who do not verbally commit on the visit; and 7) final recruit's decision to commit or not. I guess my question would be from step 5 to step 7, what percentage is considered good to gain a commitment?

UA is locked into a top four seed meaning they will get a two-day bye in the conference tournament. However, its seeding in the tournament is unknown at this point and the team could move to No. 2 behind Houston.

First Year in the BIG 12 Womens Basketball

I don't know if anyone on this site even cares about UA Women's Basketball, but today we just lost our one and only BIG 12 Postseason conference game to Colorado. A former PAC 12 conference opponent. I wanted to start a thread and ask people's perspective of the BIG 12 in terms of Women's Basketball and how they feel it compares to the PAC 12. I am also curious what people think of how the Women's BB program is doing and the job HC Barnes has done as she completes her 10th year as the HC of this program.

2026 QB Oscar Rios talks Arizona ahead of summer decision

Oscar Rios was all set to go to Purdue last fall then coaching changes happened with the Boilermakers resulting in Graham Harrell ending up elsewhere. That derailed the Downey, California native's plan and forced him to hit the reset button.

Arizona, Nike renew partnership through 2033

Arizona and Nike have renewed their sponsorship deal continuing a longstanding tradition of Nike being the apparel sponsor for the athletic program. Arizona's basketball program has long been one of the flagship teams for Nike, and the new deal will continue that relationship but also provide all the programs on campus with opportunities with the company for gear.

"Our long-term partnership with Nike has been mutually beneficial for decades and this contract extension further enhances the University's ability to support our student-athletes, coaches and staff and elevate the UA brand," UA athletic director Desireé Reed-Francois said in a statement released by the school Monday. "Today's announcement demonstrates a mutual commitment to excellence and would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication from our campus partners. This agreement positions Arizona Athletics among the nation's top programs, benefiting from robust corporate partnerships. We are grateful to Nike and its leadership team and we look forward to many more years of a wonderful partnership."

The new deal between Arizona and Nike will begin July 1.

UA adds that the "new deal significantly increases Arizona's annual Nike product allotment, ensuring that every Wildcat student-athlete has access to the most advanced footwear, apparel, and equipment in the industry. Under the terms of the extension, Arizona Athletics will have more flexibility in outfitting its teams and maximizing the impact of Nike's premier offerings."

The original agreement with Nike was made back in 2006 and was extended in 2015 while the deal was set to expire in June.

Arizona 2025 schedule update

Tommy Lloyd and his staff have already scheduled games against Alabama, UCLA and UConn for the upcoming 2025 season. Now, Lloyd has added a home-and-home series against Auburn starting in Tucson next season.

The Wildcats will have a return game that hasn't been set at this point in time.

This season, Arizona played Duke, Wisconsin, UCLA and the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. Lloyd doesn't mess around.

This is the first meeting of the season between these two programs and the first meeting as members of the Big 12 conference. Coaching change (defense)

Arizona has lost defensive backs coach Duane Akina to Texas. Akina will be going back to Austin to be the Longhorns' new DB coach.

The past season, Akina spent time as the DC and saw the defense get riddle with injuries. During the offseason, he was demoted to DB coach and saw LB coach Danny Gonzales get promoted to the programs new DC.

I do not believe there was any hard feelings towards Brent Brennan. However, Gonzales will be running a 3-3-5 set which Akina was more of a 3-4 and 4-2-5 base defensive coach over the last several seasons.

This is a massive on field coaching blow to Arizona. Akina is probably the best DB coach in the country and is now heading to Texas.

GAME THREAD: No. 19 Arizona vs. BYU

No. 19 Arizona returns home to take on BYU.

The Wildcats defeated the Cougars earlier in February 85-74. Caleb Love, Jaden Bradley and Henri Veesaar all scored at least 17 points in the win.

Arizona will look to pick up another win at McKale Center and sweep the season series over the Cougars.

AP Poll Top 25 Update: Arizona

Last week, Arizona suffered back-to-back losses to Kansas State (73-70) and then against then-No. 6 Houston (62-58) causing the Wildcats to fall two games behind the Cougars for the top spot in the Big 12 conference. UA is tied with Texas Tech for the No. 2 spot in the conference with just six games remaining in the regular season.

Arizona does still have a shot to win the conference but will need some help with last Saturday's game being the only meeting between UA and Houston. The Cougars last six games are @ASU, No. 8 Iowa State, @No. 9 Texas Tech, Cincinnati, No. 23 Kansas and @Baylor.

GAME THREAD: No. 13 Arizona vs. No. 6 Houston

Hey guys, I wanted to jump in and get the game thread gong for today's showdown between Arizona and Houston in what is the only meeting of the year between these two programs. If the Wildcats are able to win, they will sit at the top of the Big 12 conference with the tie breaker over the Cougars. However, if UA falls, Houston will have a nice cushion over everyone else. Trey Townsend is practicing on the court and is expected to play. I don't know if he will be back in the starting lineup, but expect him to have significant minutes in the game.
