AP Poll Top 25 Update: Arizona

Last week, Arizona suffered back-to-back losses to Kansas State (73-70) and then against then-No. 6 Houston (62-58) causing the Wildcats to fall two games behind the Cougars for the top spot in the Big 12 conference. UA is tied with Texas Tech for the No. 2 spot in the conference with just six games remaining in the regular season.

Arizona does still have a shot to win the conference but will need some help with last Saturday's game being the only meeting between UA and Houston. The Cougars last six games are @ASU, No. 8 Iowa State, @No. 9 Texas Tech, Cincinnati, No. 23 Kansas and @Baylor.

GAME THREAD: No. 13 Arizona vs. No. 6 Houston

Hey guys, I wanted to jump in and get the game thread gong for today's showdown between Arizona and Houston in what is the only meeting of the year between these two programs. If the Wildcats are able to win, they will sit at the top of the Big 12 conference with the tie breaker over the Cougars. However, if UA falls, Houston will have a nice cushion over everyone else. Trey Townsend is practicing on the court and is expected to play. I don't know if he will be back in the starting lineup, but expect him to have significant minutes in the game.

Arizona has three players selected to participate in the NFL combine

The NFL released its list of invites for the upcoming NFL combine in Indianapolis on Thursday, and the Wildcats will be represented by three players at the event. Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan leads the group, but his selection is no surprise. Joining McMillan in Indianapolis at the combine will be offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea and kicker Tyler Loop.

McMillan is projected as one of the top picks in the upcoming draft after he wrapped up a stellar career with the Wildcats. The junior still has remaining eligibility but still set several records in his career at UA. That includes being the new career leader in receiving yards with 3,423 that was set during the 2024 season. As a junior, McMillan caught 84 passes for 1,319 yards and 8 touchdowns. He never caught fewer than 8 touchdown passes in his three-year career in Tucson.

His best season came in 2023 when he caught 90 passes for 1,402 yards and 10 touchdowns en route to helping Arizona secure a 10-win campaign and an Alamo Bowl win.

The experts at NFL.com currently have McMillan slotted as the 12th pick overall in the first round to the Dallas Cowboys. That would make McMillan just the fourth first-round selection since 2000 and the highest pick since Chris McAlister went 10th overall to the Baltimore Ravens.

Savaiinaea, like McMillan, spent his entire career with the Wildcats and became a key cog in the offensive line over his time at UA. The versatile lineman spent his time at both left and right tackle in 2024, but he also played guard during his career as well. NFL.com currently is projecting Savaiinaea to land with the Detroit Lions at No. 28 overall, which would make him the second first-round offensive line selection from UA in the last two years after Jordan Morgan was picked 25th overall by the Green Bay Packers in 2024.

Should both McMillan and Savaiinaea both be selected in the first round, it would mark the first instance of that happening for Arizona since 1990 when Chris Singleton (8th) and Anthony Smith (11th) were selected in the opening round.

Loop put together a stellar career at Arizona and is one of just six specialists who was invited to the combine. The Texas native would be the first Arizona kicker since Nick Folk in 2007 to be selected in the draft if he is picked this year.

The NFL combine will take place from Feb. 24-March 3 in Indianapolis.

Arizona lands 2025 three-star running back Cornelius Warren III

Late Tuesday afternoon Arizona added to its 2025 class by landing a running back out of Texas in three-star RB Cornelius Warren III, who had picked UA over offers from UNLV, ASU, Baylor, Texas Tech and Arkansas amongst others.

Before flipping to Arizona, Warren was committed to UNLV but a coaching change allowed him to explore other options and UA was right there looking to add to its class.

This gives Arizona two running backs in the 2025 class with Wesley Yarbrough and Cornelius Warren III. Both backs are out of the state of Texas and show how hard RB coach Alonzo Carter has been working in the state to gain football for the program.

In all, Arizona how has 27 recruits for the 2025 class and sits at 45 nationality in Rivals ranking system.

Arizona and Tommy Lloyd keep taking swings when adding games to its non-conference schedule

Throughout the Tommy Lloyd era, he has shown that he isn't afraid of scheduling tough non-conference match up with home-and-home series and one off games. Some teams that UA has played during this time include Duke, Alabama, Indiana, Wisconsin, Purdue, Tennessee and Michigan State. Now, Lloyd is adding another monster to the team's non-conference schedule with CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein reporting that Arizona and UConn have agreed on a home-and-home series starting during the 2025-26 seasoning Connecticut and then a return game to Tucson the following season.

The Big 12 is a meat grinder game in and game and out. Yet, Lloyd isn't backing down on scheduling tough non-conference opponents and giving Wildcats fans some exciting home games to look forward to.

Big 12 releases full 2025 football schedule

The Big 12 released its full slate of games for the upcoming football season Tuesday, and that means Arizona learned what its full schedule will look like in Year 2 under Brent Brennan. We already knew that the Wildcats would open up the 2025 season with three home games and will not play a game away from Arizona Stadium until Sept. 27.

The season opens with a matchup against Hawaii in Tucson on Sept. 30 followed by home contests against Weber State and Kansas State (non-Big 12 matchup) before the Wildcats have one of their two byes on the year.

The conference slate will begin with a road game against Iowa State with the Wildcats set to make their first trip to Ames since 1968. Arizona holds an all-time lead in the series with the Cyclones, 4-1-1, with all of the games taking place over a 20-year span beginning in 1948. UA will then return home again to square off with Oklahoma State on Oct. 4 followed by an Oct. 11 meeting with BYU at Arizona Stadium on Oct. 11. That will mark the first meeting with the Cowboys since the Wildcats upset then-No. 18 OSU early in the 2012 season in Tucson. The Cowboys hold the all-time edge in the series, 5-4.

Arizona and BYU have linked up plenty of times before and this year's meeting will be the 27th between the two programs. UA has lost its last four games against the Cougars including last season's 41-19 defeat in Provo. BYU has a 13-12-1 lead in the all-time series.

Next up for Arizona will be a bye week sandwiched between road games at Houston (Oct. 18) and Colorado (Nov. 1). The Wildcats lost to Deion Sanders' Buffaloes, 34-7, in 2024 but scored a decisive home win over the Cougars, 27-3, last season in Tucson. UH holds a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams.

The final four weeks of the season will feature two road games and two home games beginning with a matchup against Kansas in Tucson on Nov. 18. The Wildcats will then travel to Cincinnati followed by the home finale against Baylor. UA last played Kansas in 1966 while the Wildcats and Bearcats have never met before on the gridiron.

The only previous meeting between Arizona and Baylor came in the 1992 Sun Bowl when they met up in El Paso in a contest won by the Bears, 20-15.

Arizona will of course wrap up the regular season against its bitter rival, Arizona State, on either Dec. 28 or Dec. 29. That will be decided on at a later date as will TV designations and kickoff times. The 2025 Territorial Cup game will mark the 99th edition of the in-state rivalry matchup.

Arizona guard Caleb Love receives conference honors

Monday morning Arizona guard became the first UA player to receive conference honors after being named Big 12 player of the week following the Wildcats' wins over No. 3 Iowa and in-state rival Arizona State. In those games he hit a historic 55-foot shot against the Cyclones to send the game into overtime where the Cats would go on to win and then followed the performance up against the Sun Devils where he hit dagger 3-point buckets down the stretch of the game.

Overall, in two games Love averaged 24.5 points, 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 39% from the field and knocking down nine 3-points buckets down the stretch of both games.

Although Love had back-to-back great performances, his status for the upcoming game against BYU is up in the air due to his ejection against ASU. It was first believed that he received two quick technical fouls that caused him to be tossed. However, the Big 12 announced that the call was a flagrant 2 foul and that means he could be suspended for the upcoming game, it is a league decision.

GAME THREAD: Arizona at Arizona State

Fresh off a miracle at McKale in the win over No. 3 Iowa State, Arizona gets set to take on Arizona State for the first time since joining the Big 12.

After a hot start to the season, the Sun Devils have lost five of their past seven games. They are coming off squeaking out a 70-68 win over Colorado.

It was a big night for former (albeit briefly) Arizona running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt in the East West Shrine Bowl on Thursday as the senior took home the offensive MVP award in the game after scoring two touchdowns and guiding the East to a 25-0 victory. Croskey-Merritt, who had his season cut short because of eligibility issues, had his moment to showcase his abilities in front of NFL personnel throughout the week.

He was one of the top practice players throughout the several days in Dallas, and that carried over into Thursday's game. He got things started with a big 27-yard run to set up his first touchdown that eventually came on a 6-yard score for the former New Mexico standout.

Croskey-Merritt then followed that up with a 1-yard rushing score up the middle later in the second quarter. The Montgomery, Alabama native ended the night with 97 yards rushing on 11 carries and two touchdowns.

The one-time Alabama State standout shined in his one performance at Arizona against his former team in the 2024 season as he rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown on just 13 carries against the Lobos in the season opener.

NFL.com's Chad Reuter named Croskey-Merritt as one of his five standouts from the game and said the 5-foot-10 running back had "an eye-opening effort for teams in the market to pick a running back on Day 3 of the draft."

Alijah Arenas off the board to USC

Alijah Arenas came off the board to USC today following an announcement on his dad's podcast, Gil Arena, earlier today. The five-star 2025 guard, who recently reclassified, took a visit to USC earlier in the week and things moved quickly with him deciding to make his choice after that. Not included in the clip were comments from Gilbert Arenas saying he wanted his son to land at Arizona but that the persistence from Eric Musselman calling Alijah constantly made a difference in why he ended up picking USC over the other options that also included Kentucky and Louisville.
