The Arizona Wildcats dropped their final regular season game of the year Sunday afternoon, falling to California 7-4 in front of 2,534 fans at Hi Corbett Field.
Arizona finished the regular season at 37-19 and 16-14 in Pac-12 play. Cal finishes at 25-29 and 15-15 in league.
The Wildcats will now wait until Monday morning to see where they will open NCAA Tournament play. The selection show is set for 9 a.m., MST on ESPN2. The Wildcats are poised to be the only Pac-12 team to make back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead Sunday, before seeing the Bears come back for the victory. In the first inning, Cal Stevenson led off the game with a single and scored on a two-out base knock from Alfonso Rivas to open the scoring.
In the second, Cesar Salazar and Louis Boyd singled back-to-back with two outs and Stevenson walked to load the bases for Jared Oliva. Oliva walked to score Salazar and make it 2-0. That stayed the score until the fourth when the Cats plated a couple more runs. Kyle Lewis led off the inning with a double and Salazar was hit by a pitch to put two on.
Arizona then loaded the bases when Boyd singled. Stevenson and Oliva produced back-to-back sacrifice flies to score Lewis and Salazar and make it 4-0.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher Cody Deason was on cruise control for the Wildcats. He retired 12 straight from the first to the fifth inning, before the Golden Bears finally got to him with two outs in the fifth. A pair of two-out singles plated two runs to make it 4-2 and end Deason’s day at 60 pitches.
Deason went five innings, giving up four hits, one earned runs, three strikeouts and didn’t walk anybody.
Landon Faulkner held Cal off the scoreboard in the in the sixth, but the Bears scored three in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. With two outs and nobody on, Tanner Dodson doubled and Matt Ruff followed with a double of his own to plate a run and make it 4-3. Following a single, Ripken Reyes doubled home two runs to give Cal its first lead of the game.
The Golden Bears added two more runs off Tylor Megill in the ninth to make it 7-4. Arizona saw its first two batters reach base in the ninth and loaded the bases with two outs, but couldn’t scratch any runs out.
