From Arizona Athletics
Arizona State (31-17, 13-11 Pac-12) took game three of the series from Arizona (32-18, 15-12 Pac-12) by a score of 5-1. Gage Canning went 3-5 with two doubles, a triple and an RBI for Arizona State. Jordan Aboites (5-1) earned the win with Eder Erives recording his eighth save of the season.
Kevin Ginkel (2-1) got the ball for the Wildcats on Sunday afternoon. He was near perfect the last time he faced Arizona State, but the Sun Devils were able to get to him this time. He tossed six innings and allowed seven hits and three runs while making 75 pitches.
In the bottom of the first, Zach Gibbons extended his on-base streak to 52 games dating back to last season with a double to the left center gap. He moved to third base on a groundball, but the Wildcats could not bring him home.
After three quite innings by both team, the Sun Devils threatened in the top of the fifth with runners on first and third with one out. Cesar Salazar proceeded to pick off Ryan Lillard at third base and then Ginkel got the third out with a strikeout.
Arizona State had runners on first and third again in the top of the sixth after a double by Gage Canning and a single by David Greer. Colby Woodmansee proceeded to ground out into a double play, but Canning came home to score.
Bobby Dalbec moved from third base to the mound in the top of the seventh after the Sun Devils led off the inning with back-to-back singles. He proceeded to strikeout Daniel Williams, but Erives singled to left, bringing home a run. Canning followed that up with a double, which brought home another run, making the score 3-0.
Arizona State wasn’t finished in the inning though as a single by Andrew Shaps brought home two more runs, giving the Sun Devils a 5-0 lead at the seventh inning stretch.
Cameron Ming came on to pitch in the top of the eighth and got out of the inning quickly with a double play.
The Wildcats got something going in the bottom of the eighth after back-to-back walks by Cody Ramer and Gibbons to lead off the inning. Matijevic grounded out to second base, but the runners were able to advance 90 feet. Ryan Aguilar then brought Ramer home with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, making the score 5-1 Arizona State. That’s all Arizona would score in the inning as Dalbec fouled out to end the frame.
Arizona put a pair of baserunners on in the bottom of the ninth, but they would be stranded there to end the game.
Today’s attendance was 3,648, making the total weekend attendance 18,039, which is an average of 6,013 per game.
The Wildcats are back in action next Friday as they head to Eugene, Ore. to face the Oregon Ducks in a three-game series to close out the conference season.
