So I made a stop by Salpointe last night as Goodyear-Desert Edge made the trek down for a game. There were a lot of Arizona targets and potential Arizona targets to watch in the game, which turned out to be an entertaining one that went down to the wire. Salpointe pulled it out 28-21. I talked to a few players after the game who Arizona wants in Tucson in the coming years.
Here's a little rundown of what each had to say.
I'll start with the 2019 recruit playing in the game and Nassir Sims has certainly become a priority for the Wildcats. The three-star defensive tackle said his lead recruiter, Joe Gilbert, has become a father figure in his life already and there is a strong connection there with UA. The biggest thing the Wildcats have going for them in this recruitment is that Sims feels wanted by the program and he said even when he talks to friends he has on the team he hears how much the team wants him and he gets told how much the coaching staff talks about him.
Right now he is planning to take an official visit out to Arizona during an off week this season and he also has plans for an official visit to Washington State in the works as well. Based on chatting with him Friday night I would be pretty surprised if Arizona isn't where he ends up. His upcoming visits could always change things but right now the Wildcats are the team to beat in my opinion.
He was definitely disruptive last night and would give the staff a lot to work with right from the get go.
Bijan Robinson was Bijan Robinson to start last night's game as he took his first carry to the house on a ridiculous run that he made look easy. After that it was a bit more rough as he had issues holding onto the ball including one fumble that turned into a touchdown the other way as the ball was ripped right out of his hands and returned to the end zone. Still, he's someone who is going to have a ton of options by the time he has to decide and he already has some major offers on the table.
He said it has been good getting to know Arizona's staff and there is definitely a comfort there. He will take a visit to Michigan with his teammate Lathan Ransom here soon. He's supposed to be at UA's game later today.
Ransom recently picked up offers from Oklahoma and Michigan and holds offers from Georgia, Stanford and Washington as well. He was very impressive last night with a couple picks and some big hits. He's got great size and a good feel for the game on the back end of the defense. The Salpointe staff puts him in all kinds of different positions and situations and he does well at all of them. He looks most natural at free safety and that is where he made his big plays last night.
He said the new staff has been welcoming to him and he's excited to see how the team does this year. He will be at tonight's game to check things out.
A couple 2021 prospects for Desert Edge I kept an eye on are the two listed above. Steven Ortiz Jr. already has good size and that is why a few schools have already offered. He played corner last night and Salpointe generally stayed away from his side of the field, but he still came up with some good plays throughout the night and definitely looks the part.
Roy has a good base to work from and while he will need to continue to add some weight he has good footwork and did a good job at tackle for Desert Edge. He visited with Ortiz earlier in the summer and he is someone the Wildcats have their eye on.
