Among the first wave of signees set to report by the end of the week is offensive tackle Jordan Poland.
As a former product of Gilbert (Ariz.) Williams Field, he has the memory of the Wildcats before Rodriguez and his staff took over in Tucson. That also includes his own perception of the program then and how he looks at the situation today.
"At the time, I was young," Poland recalled. "I was just excited, 'Oh man, colleges are coming to visit me.' Now, I see it more as where you're going to spend the next four years of your life, so it's a big decision.
"But when I was originally getting offered by them, I didn't even think of [playing for them as a possibility] so much then as I do now."
A big part of that was because Poland was once committed to USC. Yet, remained in his ear the whole time.
When it came time to part ways, the next destination was simple.
"I do have love for people who show loyalty along the way," he said.
And loyalty is among the key pieces to the family-like atmosphere that has made several players look at Arizona as a home away from home.
Poland is no different. It's not just on the field, but the life experiences away from football that has him invested in the staff.
"You know you have someone there who is going to have your back 100 percent of the time," Poland said. "You don't want to feel uncomfortable, knowing that if you have a problem going on in your life you can go to that person and talk. 'Hey, this is going on. What's your take on this?' And they can give you some advice to help you, both as an athlete and as a person.
"I think it's good because you need to have that trust with your coaching staff. It's definitely a big part because I love how we can all just call each other a family up there."
Basketball
* Nick Johnson had private workouts with the Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder this past. By the time he is done with his tour around the NBA cities leading up to the draft, he will have showcased himself in front of about half the league.
* Meanwhile, GOAZCATS.com caught up with a draft expert who attended the Pangos All-American camp in Long Beach, Calif. over the weekend and he was in attendance for Aaron Gordon's draft combine and following showcase put on by his agency, BDA Sports.
Gordon left the source wanting more, looking at the event as time to show what only he wanted to show. As was the case throughout his lone season at Arizona, the forward wanted to make it clear he was just that - and not a specific position - and that he could shoot the ball better than he did in college. Most of the workout consisted of shooting drills, with a heavy emphasis along the perimeter. It also should be noted that there was no opposing defender and among those who ran his workout was Charlie Torres, who currently trains Stanley Johnson and did the same for Derrick Williams leading up to his draft selection.
Now, here is the latest on the recruiting trail from Matt Moreno:
Five months of 2014 have already come and gone now heading into the start of June, and lately the month has been a busy one for both the football and basketball recruiting scene. On the football side of things Rich Rodriguez has traditionally picked up quite a few commitments during the month of June in his time at Arizona. On the basketball side June is a big month for visits as recruits start to look more closely at their decisions.
There were plenty of recruits in action over the weekend in both sports at various events, so there is plenty to discuss when it comes to recruitments and the Wildcats.
On the football side of things Rodriguez said earlier in the year that things would move more slowly this cycle but that hasn't quite been the case. It will be interesting to see if June can be another big month for the 'Cats like it has been in the past.
On the basketball side of things the Wildcats are well on their way to filling the 2015 class with a couple of big commitments already. A few of the program's remaining targets in the class were in Long Beach, Calif., for the Pangos All-American Camp over the weekend and we spoke with them about where things currently stand with UA and their recruitments.
With things starting to heat up on the recruiting trail, we won't waste any more time. Here is this week's recruiting portion of the War Room.
Football recruiting
As we mentioned before the month of June has been a big one in the past for the Wildcats when it comes to earning commitments. While there are plenty of prospects who are expected to make decisions in the summer most have been talking about July being the big month. For now there are prospect who continue to stay high on UA as the summer approaches.
* One recruit who has kept the Wildcats high on his list comes from an area the UA coaching staff would love to get into as things move forward. Baton Rouge (La.) Central receiver Terrell Chatman has long had the Wildcats high up on his list of favorites and the program remains there heading into the summer. The three-star prospect has a nice list of offers, but Arizona's offense is something that has him excited.
"Right now some of my top schools would probably be Georgia, Arizona, and Arizona State and schools like that," Chatman told Rivals.com. " ... Georgia is really my first SEC offer, so I was pretty hyped up about that.
"Arizona, I like the offense. I like the spread offense they run. They can get the ball to me a lot. Arizona State too, I like the spread offense."
Chatman plans on camping at LSU later this month, but he's also planning to get out and see some other schools as well.
"I'm going to take visits, but I'm not sure on them right now," he said.
When it comes to what the 6-foot-4 prospect is looking for in a program the coaching staff is a big priority.
"Basically the coaches," he said. "How comfortable I feel, and if it feels like home. That's basically it."
One of the coaches Chatman said he has built a good relationship with so far is Arizona's Calvin Magee along with LSU's Cam Cameron. The three-star prospect is currently rated as the 78th-best receiver in his class, and some of his offers include schools like Louisville, Southern Miss, and Wake Forest to name a few.
* Another Louisiana-based prospect the Wildcats have been involved with is two-star cornerback recruit Antonio Parks from Reserve (La.) East St. John. The 5-foot-10 recruit has a long offer list that includes schools like Clemson, Duke, Iowa State, and UCF to name a few.
At this point the Wildcats are one of the programs doing well with Parks, but there is one program that seems to be standing out above the rest as he heads into the summer months.
"I have three leaders right now," Parks told Rivals.com. "I have a top three of Clemson, Arizona, and Arizona State. Clemson is pretty much on top right now with coach (Brent) Venables and coach (Mike) Reed. Those guys stay on top of me, and I'll be out there for a visit on the 14th (June). That's pretty much where I'm at with the recruiting process right now."
Even though the Tigers are his clear leader at this point Parks is planning to still visit Tucson should he remain uncommitted after his trip to Clemson later this month.
"I'm going to visit Arizona probably later this month," he said. "And I'll visit Arizona State next month."
Parks said there is a chance he does commit when he takes a visit to Clemson, but if that's not the case the other two schools will get visits. Having other options on his list is something that is important to the cornerback prospect.
"It's good to experience the process, and see what other coaches have to offer and other schools have to offer," he said. "Keeping that on the safe side, because I am still interested in other schools."
Much like Arizona has a policy with commitments taking other visits, Clemson has something similar. So should Parks give the Tigers his pledge a trip to Tucson would likely not take place at that point.
Basketball recruiting
The past weekend was a big one on the recruiting scene as the Pangos All-American Camp took place over the three days in Long Beach, Calif. The event brings together some of the top talent around regardless of shoe company to compete for three days. There were some big names who weren't able to make it out for various reasons, but there were definitely some important prospects who made the trip to participate.
When you have that many top prospects in one place there is naturally going to be some Arizona recruits on hand, and there were certainly plenty.
* One recruit who shined once he arrived Saturday was four-star wing prospect Ray Smith. The Las Vegas, Nev., prospect had the best showing by far on the final day of action and he impressed plenty of onlookers with his abilities. Arizona continues to do well with Smith, but UCLA is making a strong push as well.
The 6-foot-8 recruit said he was trying to squeeze in an unofficial visit to Westwood before heading back to Las Vegas, and the Bruins are certainly in a good spot as well.
UA has continued to make Smith a priority, and things continue to go well for both sides in his recruitment.
"Very involved," Smith told GOAZCATS.com's Evyn Murray over the weekend. "They're obviously in my top 10. I talk with Damon Stoudamire and Sean Miller almost every day. They are really honest guys, especially Damon Stoudamire. He always tells me how it is, and that's one thing that I could really say I like about him.
"He doesn't hold back nothing."
Smith is still in the process of planning all his visits, but the Wildcats will receive one of his official trips.
* Another recruit who remains in play for the Wildcats is five-star combo guard Isaiah Briscoe. The Newark (N.J.) Roselle Catholic prospect doesn't like to say much about his recruitment publicly, but the Wildcats are one school he is still strongly considering. Briscoe had an outstanding camp in Long Beach and he took home one of the camp MVP awards.
He was really able to make a statement against UA commit Tyler Dorsey on the opening night of action, and he is definitely a recruit who could see his stock continue to rise.
The Wildcats are in a good spot with Briscoe and at this point it's one school he is still very much considering. Florida State is also in there as well, but after talking with some sources over the weekend it's clear that Arizona is a school that will be in it until the end even if Briscoe doesn't want to discuss specifics about programs involved in public.
The next few weeks could be very important for Briscoe as he was invited to the U18 USA Basketball camp where Sean Miller will be an assistant coach. Dorsey and fellow UA commit Justin Simon are also expected to be there and it could be a time for all the prospects to discuss the possibility of potentially playing together. Should Briscoe not make the team he would likely opt to take some visits later this month I was told.
There are some specific things Briscoe is looking for when it comes to his recruitment.
"I just want to go somewhere where I can play my game and feel comfortable on the court," he told GOAZCATS.com. "I want that coach that will push me to the next level beyond college basketball."
Since Dorsey and even Simon play a similar position to Briscoe there has been plenty of talk about how a lot of guards would coexist in Arizona's system. The New Jersey native doesn't have too many concerns about that.
"I don't pay attention to that," he said. "Like I said, if I decide to commit to Arizona I'm going to go there and take care of my business."
* One of the other pieces of the guard puzzle for Arizona was in attendance at the event as well in Dorsey. The Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco recruit had a nice weekend for himself, and of course there were plenty of questions about his future as well being asked to the five-star prospect.
At this point things are still fine with Arizona and his commitment, but Dorsey didn't shy away from the fact that he and Simon are similar in style of play. That's something that could get ironed out at the USA Basketball camp as both prospects will be there. And even though Dorsey is committed there have still been plenty of schools showing interest in the elite combo guard.
"Until you sign that dotted line schools are still coming after you hard," Dorsey told GOAZCATS.com. "... they just waver sometimes, but that's how it goes."
When it comes to the topic of Simon that's something that Dorsey wants to continue to monitor as things move forward.
"I know we're pretty similar," Dorsey said. "We're both combo guards. We play the same position, but I think it would be a good back court. But you know never know how we gel, because I don't really know him."
Dorsey added that he is "firmly committed" to Arizona right now, but beyond that he mentioned that he's not sure what the future holds when it comes to his recruitment.
There will be much more coverage from the Pangos All-American Camp all week, so continue to check back for more from the event.
