GAME THREAD: Arizona vs Grambling State (2020-21 opener)

Arizona has basketball! The two teams have been cleared today through testing and are ready to take the floor at McKale Center with UA now set to finally open its season. Follow along for game updates and observations throughout the day plus I invite you to join the conversation as the Wildcats begin the season.

🏀 Pregame

- Ira Lee (concussion) is not expected to play in today's game as the Wildcats open the season. He has missed a considerable amount of practice time this preseason.​

🏀 Starters


🏀 1st half

- Thomas gets Grambling on the board first with a second-chance bucket; Jordan Brown makes his first shot for the Wildcats to even up the game; Dalen Terry hits a 3-point to get his career with the Wildcats underway and UA takes a lead into the first media timeout​
SCORE UPATE: Arizona - 5 Grambling St. - 2/15:50
- After a Christian Koloko make, James Akinjo gets his first points for the Wildcats as he hits a 3-pointer; Thomas with a dunk on the other end for Grambling; Azuolas Tubelis with a 3-point play to begin his UA career; Ben Mathurin gets a layup and UA's lead is now 11 points as the Wildcats have opened up on a 15-4 run; Cameron Woodall fouled and he gets the bucket for a 3-point play after already hitting a couple free throws to help the Tigers close the gap​
SCORE UPDATE: Arizona - 15 Grambling - 9/11:53
- Peyton Taylor with a 3-pointer to cut the UA lead in half; Brown hits for the Wildcats to extend the lead back out to 5 points; Akinjo hits for the Wildcats and the UA lead is back up to 7 points forcing a Grambling timeout; Terry fouled and he hits one of two from the line for the Wildcats; Brown now with 6 points and 7 rebounds after he connects once more for UA​
SCORE UPDATE: Arizona - 22 Grambling St. - 12/7:08
- Mathurin extends the lead with a couple free throws; Travell Cunningham hits on a layup for the Tigers and the lead is back down to 10; Jemarl Baker Jr. gets on the board with a 3-pointer to give UA its biggest lead yet at 13 points; Woodall with a couple free throws for the Tigers; Sarion McGee hits a layup and takes the UA lead down to single digits; Brown with a dunk for the Wildcats and UA is back up by 11 as Brown has 8 points and 8 rebounds​
SCORE UPDATE: Arizona - 29 Grambling St. - 18/3:18
- Tubelis with another bucket as the Wildcats extend the lead back up to 13 points; Akinjo gets a steal and goes the other way with it for another bucket and a 15-point Arizona lead; Moss hits for the Tigers to cut the UA lead down a bit; Mathurin hits a 3-pointer for the Wildcats; Akinjo hits one of two at the line for UA to push the lead up to 17 points; Akinjo to the line again for Arizona and he hits both to give the Wildcats their biggest lead of the game at 19 points and UA uses a timeout; Prince Moss hits a 3-pointer with less than five seconds left to cut into the UA lead before the break​

🏀 2nd half

- Koloko gets fouled and hits one of two from the line for UA; Thomas gets a big dunk off a nice play on the PnR to get on the board in the second half; Brown adds to his total with another bucket off an assist from Akinjo for UA and the lead is up to 17 points; The Wildcats' big men are holding things down early in the half as Koloko gets another bucket to give UA a 19-point lead on a put-back dunk; Cameron Christon gets the Tigers on the board again with a jumper​
SCORE UPDATE: Arizona - 44 Grambling St. - 27/15:36
- Terry hits three free throws out of the timeout after being fouled in the corner to give UA its biggest lead of the game; Cunningham hits a jump in the lane for Grambling; an offensive foul turns into a bucket on the other end for Grambling from Christon and the lead is down to 16; Koloko with a dunk and he now has 7 points and 9 rebounds; Woodall hits a 3-pointer and the UA lead is now down to 15 points; Woodall hits a layup to cut into the Arizona lead some more; Randolph hits a jumper as the Tigers have mounted a come back against the second unit​
SCORE UPDATE: Arizona - 49 Grambling - 38/11:39
- Akinjo hits a 3-pointer out of the timeout and he now has 13 points to lead the Wildcats; Moss with a couple free throws to cut back into the lead; Brown adds a couple more points to his total on transition bucket to push the lead back to 14; Christon getting going a bit and he connects on a tough play along the baseline and he makes it a 3-point play after drawing a foul; Akinjo says hot and hits from 3-point range to push the lead back to 14 for the Wildcats​
SCORE UPDATE: Arizona - 57 Grambling St. - 43/8:30
- Cunningham fouled by Akinjo and he makes both free throws to cut into the UA lead; Woodall with a put-back dunk and the Tigers have cut the UA lead down to just 10 points; Mathurin fouled and he makes one of two from the line; Brown fouled and he hits both free throws to push the lead back out to 13 points; Brown fouled again and he hits one of two from the line and he now has 15 points for Arizona; Woodall fouled by Baker and the Grambling State wing completes the 3-point play; Mathurin fouled and he makes both free throws for the Wildcats; Cunningham fouled hits a couple free throws for the Tigers; Brown with a dunk and he now has 17 points to lead the Wildcats​
SCORE UPDATE: Arizona - 65 Grambling St. - 52/3:43
- Randolph hits one of two from the line for the Tigers; Terrell Brown gets on the board with two free throws for the Wildcats; Woodall with another bucket and he has 19 points to lead all scorers while trimming the UA lead to 12 points; Maturin fouled and hits both free throws for UA; Akinjo now with 19 points as he hits a 3-pointer for the Wildcats and the lead is up to 17 for UA; Brown tacks on another bucket as the Wildcats close out their first win​
FINAL SCORE: Arizona - 74 Grambling State - 55
