So for tonight's game I won't be doing my usual play by play since it is just an exhibition but I will write up a few summaries for each of the 10-minute segments of the game to give you an idea of what's going on in this one.
Obviously there is already some pregame news, so make sure to follow along for periodical updates and join the conversation as well throughout the game. If you want to watch the game it is being streamed for free at this link.
Pregame
- Devonaire Doutrive has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules while freshman Zeke Nnaji has an ankle injury and will miss the exhibition.
UA starters
- Nico Mannion, Josh Green, Dylan Smith, Ira Lee, Chase Jeter
1st half
20:00-10:00 (Score: Arizona - 19 Chico State - 16)
Arizona came out with some good defensive intensity but just couldn't find much of a rhythm overall and is being outworked by Chico State so far. The Wildcats have been working the inside game and the bigs have done a good job cleaning up the glass so far in this one. The bench provided a nice spark offensively but Chico State continues to remain efficient from the field and is hanging around.
Ira Lee is the leading scorer with 4 points for UA.
9:59 - 0:00 (Score: Chico State - 33 Arizona - 32)
Chico State got hot from deep in the second part of the first half hitting four shots 3-point range down the stretch and it has them out in front at the break. Arizona simply hasn't found a great offensive rhythm with a lot of the points coming off second chances. Right now the Wildcats are shooting 37% from the field. The big stat that Sean Miller isn't going to like is the 9 turnovers for his team. That has led 13 points off turnovers for Chico State. Arizona, meanwhile, only has 2 points off turnovers despite Chico State having 8 turnovers in this game.
Top scorer: Chase Jeter (7) Top rebounder: Ira Lee (5) Assists leader: Nico Mannion (5)
2nd half
20:00 - 10:00 (Score: Arizona - 48 Chico State - 42)
Arizona definitely looks its best when it's able to get out and run and play in transition. That hasn't been often tonight, but it has been there for the Wildcats to take if they want it. The offense has settled in overall, however, and Arizona has been able to build a small lead. UA has done a better job of taking care of the ball to start the second half with just a few turnovers and that has helped the game calm down and get the Wildcats some control in this one.
Ira Lee leads the way for Arizona with 10 points and 10 rebounds
9:59 - 0:00 (Score: Arizona - 74 Chico State - 65)
Arizona does a good job of getting to the free-throw line over the last portion of the game. The free points helped the Wildcats create some separation. The Wildcats are still doing a lot of their most effective work in the paint tonight and they have a big advantage as you would expect against a D-II team in the paint. Chase Jeter and Ira Lee were the first two players to score in double figures proving how much of tonight's work for Arizona has come down low. Chico State makes it interesting late as it closes the gap on UA in the final couple minutes.
Final: Arizona - 74 Chico State - 65
