Arizona's first depth chart is out and there are certainly plenty of things to point out. I'm getting ready to head out to Kevin Sumlin's first press conference so I will have some more examination in a little while but here are some things that jump out.
First, there are Myles Tapusoa and Trevon Mason being named the starters at nose and tackle, respectively. That is significant considering both had some ground to make up at the start of camp. It's a good sign for the progress and gives UA a solid second group. JB Brown (end) and Jalen Harris (end) round out the first defensive line unit.
Boobie Curry ended up getting that co-starting role at wideout along with Drew Dixon, so that is another good sign considering he had been a bit banged up during camp.
Jamarye Joiner gets that co-starter nod with Brian Casteel in the slot as expected.
Along the offensive line Robert Congel has won the starting left guard job over Josh Donovan while Paiton Fears and Edgar Burrola are listed as co-starters at right tackle. Both situations are as expected with the right tackle job to be decided by game time.
Rhett Rodriguez gets the No. 2 job behind Khalil Tate at quarterback, but that is a fluid situation. That is somewhat expected considering he has the most experience, but should something happen to Tate that would bring long-term absence from the field I still do believe that Grant Gunnell would jump Rodriguez at that point. It all depends on what the situation is.
Casteel and Stanley Berryhill III get the co-starter job at punt returner on the first depth chart.
