Other notable offers: Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah State, NAU, Idaho, North Texas, Eastern Washington
Rundown: Arizona became the first Power Five school to jump into the recruitment of versatile defensive recruit Charlotin Charles earlier today. The 6-foot prospect from high school powerhouse program Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas could play multiple positions on the defensive side of the ball but he will likely fit in as a defensive back at the next level.
It has been a bit of a slower process for Charles, but Arizona's interest is certainly genuine and you should see the Wildcats be a bit more aggressive in his recruitment. We have already talked about the versatility that Arizona is striving to have at certain positions and that has been particularly clear on the defensive side of the ball where several of the offers that have gone out from the staff have been to recruits who could play several different roles for Paul Rhoads.
I know some of you have brought up the comparison to Tra'Mayne Bondurant with other recruits, and Charles is another prospect who I would put in that category. He's not someone who you can pigeonhole into one position. He could play cornerback but he could also play safety and he could play linebacker. He's truly a hybrid type of player who packs a punch.
When watching his film there were a ton of moments when Bishop Gorman's staff used him as an edge rusher even, so the possibilities are certainly aplenty when it comes to how a coach will be able to utilize him at the next level.
Arizona's relationship with recruits in Las Vegas has become a bit strained over the last couple years, but there has been a renewed sense of becoming involved with prospects from the area. The offer from the Wildcats is going to hold some weight and if the staff will show those recruits attention then it should be reciprocated. This is also a situation where I could see Arizona having a lot of success if they move quickly with Charles especially as more schools now will undoubtedly begin to take a closer look at him as a prospect and option for their own programs.
Right now the Wildcats are looking at him as defensive back recruit with outside receivers coach Taylor Mazzone (Vegas recruiter for UA) and defensive backs coach Greg Burns leading the process for Arizona.
Charles had 34 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble during his junior season at Bishop Gorman.
