Their names sound like a law firm haha ... but I caught up with Texas-based Arizona official visitors Christian Young and Dayven Coleman tonight to talk about their visits. Both trips went very well and don't be surprised if you hear something about Young here very soon. I'll break down the gist of my conversations with both guys here so you get a better idea of where each stands.
Christian Young (Richmond, Texas/DB): Young sounded like a recruit ready to commit at the start of our conversation and by the end of it he basically said he's going to announce a decision this week or next week. Fresh off his trip to Arizona that essentially gives you the hint you need. The coaching staff has been a huge part of this one coming together and at this point he said it's just about talking things over with his family to make sure he's making the right decision.
The big defensive back had a good time on his trip out to Arizona and he said as of now Iowa State and Arizona State are the others most involved but he had to think about the other two when I brought it up. I haven't confirmed this but it wouldn't shock me if he has already committed to the Wildcats and is just giving some time to announce it.
As of now he said the plan is to have him come in and play the spur position which brings a whole new set of questions since the Wildcats already have a nice collection of safeties in this class and on the roster. Arizona isn't bringing him out on an official visit this late unless it plans on taking that commitment so it will be interesting to see how this whole thing comes together. This is also the reason getting recruits out on multiple visits is important. Young liked his first visit to Arizona over the summer but just from talking with him it's clear something else clicked while he was out over the weekend with students on campus and getting a better feel for things.
Quick quote: "I came down to Tucson during the summer ... and I talked to the coaches and some of the players, but there weren't as many people because it was summer. I went there for the game and it was a great experience with the fans and the students. It was live. A live campus and a live feel before the game. It was a way different feel, so it made a big difference on if I want to go to that school."
Dayven Coleman (Mesquite, Texas/DB-OLB): This one is going to take a bit longer but Arizona is already firmly in the mix for the former UCLA commit. Coleman had not been out to Tucson yet in his recruitment so it was a different feeling for him as he took in the city on his visit. He wanted to make sure and meet Rich Rodriguez on his visit as well as get a feel for the campus as well.
The versatile defensive player came out and said it right away in our conversation but he doesn't plan on deciding until the late signing period in February and he will take at least three more official visits before he comes to a decision. This trip was his first official visit, though, and he said it gave a lot for the other schools to live up to in his recruitment.
Among the highlights for Coleman were his chats with Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles but also Tony Fields and Jarrius Wallace about the program. In particular, his chat with Fields is one that stuck with him and Young said the same thing as well. Clearly the UA freshman linebacker is already becoming one of the better recruiters on the team, too.
Because he has some unique size Coleman said he essentially talked with most of Arizona's defensive staff because he could play the WILL or any of the safety positions. He also has played cornerback before as well. Right now he said the plan is to come in as a spur but there is some flexibility there, which might be important if the Wildcats eventually do land Young in the next week or so.
Kansas State, Colorado and Illinois are the next three schools that will get Coleman on campus for official visits and all of those will take place in December meaning he will get a few weeks to sit on this trip out to UA. Although he did make sure to mention, again, he won't sign until February.
Quick quote: "Arizona showed me a lot, and I saw a different side of Arizona. So, schools they've got some work to do because Arizona showed me a lot. I'll be looking forward to see what all the other schools have in store."
I'll have full articles on both tomorrow but wanted to give you guys on the boards the inside scoop first and I'm still reaching out to more visitors as well so hopefully I'll have some more updates for you guys soon
