With the transfer of Scottie Young, Tony Fields and Colin Schooler, not to mention the transferring of others back in the Spring, much has been written about how depleted our defense is and how poorly we will do this new Fall season. Admittedly I am a half-glass full guy normally. But, I'm seeing a possible light at the end of this tunnel and maybe even this season. Realistically, all of the guys who left early in the spring were non-starters and before they left often referred to as guys who would provide depth this year. Scottie Young has always been in doubt due to his behavior on and off the field. And, realistically he was gone last year. So that leaves Colin Schooler and Tony Fields. Two definite losses. Of the two I think we will miss Tony Fields more. Interestingly, he had to earn his way as a starter for WVU and has done well. Schooler missed the first game and had a good game last weekend. But, Schooler had a up and down year last year and I wonder how versatile he would have been in the new 3-4-4 defensive. His biggest flaw, other than missing tackles last year was not being quick enough to fill the gaps. In his place is a much quicker Pandy who is a much surer tackler. Harris is still here and a strong member of the four immediately behind the front three. As far as the front three, there have been no changes other than transfers and others available that we did not have last year. As far as the back four, again, Scottie Young is the only starter we lost, Time will tell, but we had younger players who showed a lot of promise. And finally, the possible emergence of D. Clark, Derrick M., Eddie S. and J. Brown allows for some hope. With a short season, we will have an opportunity to build for next year and possibly surprise some folks, many of whom have lost several starters as well.
