So who played and how long were they on the field? I have the answers for you. PFF has updated its snap counts for Arizona's game against USC yesterday giving some insight into what players the staff is relying on most to begin the season. There are certainly some interesting numbers to see and here's a breakdown of what I noticed while perusing the list. Overview
• Arizona stuck to the script for the most part with the depth chart mostly holding true in most instances in terms of who would receive playing time at the various positions. It was interesting that there has been so much talk about the depth along the offensive line, but if not for Laie getting hurt the entire starting group would have played all the snaps. Even then, Laie only missed two plays and Donovan came in to replace him. That was the first glimpse that we got of what the true depth chart is since Donovan has mostly been playing on the right side behind Congel. When it came time to replace Laie on the left side, however, it was Donovan who made the move.
The Wildcats mostly relied on four defensive backs throughout the game with some others sprinkled in as Paul Rhoads utilized his nickel package. Of the "bench" players it was Wallace who was able to get in the game most playing 23 snaps but a injures to a couple players forced the Wildcats to turn to some other options including freshman walk-on Jaydin Young.
All the players missing at receiver allowed freshman Ma'jon Wright to have a good amount of playing time in his first game. He made an impressive sideline grab late in the game and ended up playing the fourth-most snaps among the receiver group. It could be the type of game that keeps him on the field when Brian Casteel returns and Dyelan Miller is able to get on the field.
