I know this is a few days old, but I spoke with Cody Saturday morning and here is what he had to say:
OL Cody Shear out of Sheldon in Eugene, Oregon ended his recruitment and committed to Arizona last night. I spoke with him about it this morning.
"At first I was a bit worried about proximity, I didn't want to play so far away from home (he also had Washington State and Oregon State among his top schools)". However, his parents talked with him about it and urged him not to worry about distance and said they wouldn't want him to look back at his college days with regret. "After the support from my parents, I thought about all the schools and realized I had the best relationship with the coaching staff over at Arizona, especially the OL coach Jim Michalczik, he's awesome."
And just how with Shear fit in once he's on the team? "I really like the offense they run over there and feel like I fit with what they are doing. They split the pass and run pretty nicely and need athletic linemen to get out and help with the read option. I'm 6'4" so I'm pretty sure they see me as more of an interior linemen, a guard or center. Right now they are talking to me about being a pull guy in the run."
Cody has about a year until he will set foot on campus as a freshmen next summer. Between now and then he has quite a few goals and plans. "First off, I'm shutting down my recruitment. I won't be taking any official visits other than Arizona, which I hope to do sometime during the season. I never wanted recruiting to be a distraction for my high school team. With recruiting out of the way, now I can focus on my senior season and winning a championship. The older players have always pushed us and kept us focused and now I'm one of the older players. I want to teach the younger guys the right way to play for Sheldon. As long as we follow the teaching and guidance of our coaching staff, it should be a successful season."
"After that, I'll continue to work hard, getting bigger and stronger and I hope to arrive at Arizona in the 285-290 range."
Cody has been a very mature young man throughout the entire recruiting process. Despite having 30 offers, he never rushed his decision, and considered each school to some degree before narrowing his search down. He kept Boise State in the back of his mind until mid-June when it was clear they were not going to offer him. Boise State likely would have made his top 5 if they handed out an offer. Arizona is getting a solid OL recruit who was hidden a bit by being in Oregon.
