Cody Deason tossed a career-high 7 1/3 innings and struck out a career-high 10 to lift the Arizona Wildcats to a 5-4 win over Washington State on Friday at Hi Corbett Field.
The win improved Arizona to 12-9 overall and 1-3 in Pac-12 play. Washington State dropped to 4-13 and 0-4 in the league. The Wildcats stayed perfect at home, moving to 10-0 at Hi Corbett.
Deason improved to 3-1 on the season and was dominant in doing so. Through the first seven innings, he allowed just one batter to reach past second base and had a stretch in the sixth and seventh where he struck out five of six batters. He retired 13 of 14 batters from the fourth to the seventh innings and struck out the side in the seventh.
He came back out for the eighth, and after surrendering a leadoff single, he struck out center fielder Danny Sinatro for his 10th punchout of the game. He hit the next batter, which ended his night.
The Cats then went through three relievers in the inning, and Washington State scrapped together four runs on a pair of two-run singles by Justin Harrer and James Rudkin. But closer Tylor Megill got JJ Hancock swinging to end the eighth. He opened the ninth with another strikeout, before two Cougars reached base on an error and a hit by pitch.
But Megill struck out leadoff man Andres Alvarez for the second out of the inning and then catcher Cesar Salazar threw out catcher Robert Teel, who tried to advance to third on a wild pitch to end the game.
Megill earned his fifth save of the season and struck out three over 1 2/3 innings. Arizona improved to 11-0 on the season when scoring four or more runs.
The Wildcats wasted no time getting on the board Friday, plating one run in the first inning. Arizona loaded the bases with no outs after Cal Stevenson singled and Cameron Cannon and Alfonso Rivas drew back-to-back walks. Nick Quintana roped a line drive to left that was snagged by Blake Canton, but was hit hard and far enough to score Stevenson and give Arizona an early lead.
After Deason tossed a zero in the second, the Cats added another run in the bottom half. Matt Fraizer led off the inning with a single and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Haug. After Fraizer stole third, freshman shortstop Jacob Blas singled to second base to score Fraizer and make it 2-0.
The Cats went back to work in the fourth inning, adding another run. Stevenson reached on a two-out error by third baseman Dillon Plew and then stole second. Cannon followed with a two-out RBI double to right-center to score Stevenson.
Arizona made it 4-0 in the sixth when Stevenson tripled to score Blas, who walked with one out one batter prior. One inning later, pinch-hitter Tate Soderstrom tripled off the wall in right field with one out to put a runner on third. Fraizer dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score Soderstrom and make it 5-0.
Stevenson went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI. He extended his hitting streak to 10 games and hit his team-leading fifth triple in the win. Cannon went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Blas was 1 for 2 with an RBi and a run scored and also walked twice out of the ninth spot.
The Wildcats and Cougars will continue their three-game series Saturday at 6 p.m. Left-hander Avery Weems will be opposed by Washington State left-hander Scotty Sunitsch.
