I had a feeling this was something that was coming but hadn't been able to confirm it, but starting guard Christian Boettcher is planning to end his football career after this season. He's just a redshirt junior but if you watched the Cal game on TV the broadcast featured what he's accomplished on the academic side of things and he's someone who definitely values academics over everything else. He was part of the group that the team honored after practice today even though he is technically a redshirt junior.
It means that group of veterans returning next year decreases by one. There's still a strong group coming back but it certainly would have benefitted from having an experienced player back again. Devon Brewer is another non-senior on in the photo below. The safety is just a redshirt sophomore but he was a greyshirt player so academically he is ahead of where he would be as a typical redshirt sophomore.
