USA TODAY has put out its yearly database of assistant coaches salaries across college football. As you could imagine there are some big numbers as it assistant coaches are getting paid more than ever. There are currently 21 assistant coaches making over $1 million where that number was at five just five years ago.
As far as Arizona goes you could pretty much guess who was getting paid the most. The total money pool to hire assistants for UA sits at $3,155,000. Of the schools with the top 15 highest-paid assistant coaches each has a budget of over $5 million with three of them having a budget of over $7 million to hire assistant coaches. You want good assistants it comes with a price.
Here's a rundown of the numbers USA TODAY was able to obtain when it comes to UA.
1. Noel Mazzone - $600,000
2. Marcel Yates - $560,000
3. Joe Gilbert - $400,000
4. Clarence McKinney - $310,000
5. Demetrice Martin - $260,000
6. John Rushing - $225,000
7. Iona Uiagalelei - $215,000
8. Theron Aych - $200,000
9. Taylor Mazzone - $200,000
10. Jeremy Springer - $185,000
The numbers all seem to line up with what everyone believes, but it is interesting that McKinney had the associate head coach title but wasn't the third highest-paid assistant. UA had to get Gilbert from the NFL ranks so it makes sense that he garnered more money and he has certainly earned that this year. I imagine if Iona Uiagalelei can end this class with some strong prospects and puts together another good season he could be in line for a raise. He might be there anyway with what he was able to do this season. This at least gives us a clear picture of what UA is up against when looking for assistant coaches and why it is becoming a bit more clear that there won't be as much movement within the staff as it once seemed. When you have Dave Aranda making $2.5 million at LSU that wishlist of adding top coaches becomes smaller.
