There has been a wave of new commitments lately and Arizona has been able to benefit from that with its first two pledges in the 2021 class coming this week. Several other UA targets have come off the board in recent weeks, however, and here is a rundown of some of the notable prospects with Arizona offers who have committed elsewhere. The range of schools that have landed the recruits is varied but there are some themes that emerged.
One of those themes is the crossover between Arizona and SMU. A few of the prospects on the list have committed to the Texas program recently including one of the Wildcats' prime targets from the region, Dylan Goffney, who had a chance to see Arizona up close when he visited earlier in the spring. Getting recruits from Texas out of their home state is the challenge any program outside the borders faces each cycle and Arizona is experiencing that first hand even with recruits not committing to one of the big programs in the state.
Receiver Joseph Manjack also committed to the Mustangs this week joining safety target Isaac Nwokobia who committed last week to SMU. Overall there are five recruits with offers from Arizona in the 2021 class who have already decided to commit to play for Sonny Dykes and SMU.
There was also a recent run on tight end commitments with prospects picking schools all over the country. Two of the targets UA felt it had a good shot at landing ended up committing early as Ryan Hoerstkamp went with Missouri a couple weeks ago while recent offer Fernando Garza decided to stay close to home just a couple days after picking up an offer from Texas A&M. UA has focused more on tight end recruiting in this class, but so far the recruits have looked elsewhere. Only four of the tight end recruits Arizona has offered so far remain uncommitted but the Wildcats truly only remain in play with a couple of those recruits at this point, Marcus Collins and Shield Taylor.
A handful of defensive linemen have come off the board recently with some notable names now committed to schools. For Arizona there are a couple to highlight including California defensive lineman David Gusta who was only recently offered but decided to go with Fresno State over the Wildcats, the lone Power Five school on his list. Terrell Tilmon was able to visit Oregon before the recruiting dead period and that helped the Ducks land the three-star Texas defensive end.
In-state athlete/safety Hunter Barth had been able to get down to UA on several occasions, but he followed a number of other prospects from Arizona by deciding he will leave home for college and play out of state. The Queen Creek High standout decided to play at Cal where former UA coach Charlie Ragle continues to have a ton of success pulling recruits from his former home state. The change of scenery has really helped Ragle in his recruiting efforts and he has been able to land multiple players from Arizona in the 2021 class.
