The NCAA passed a couple new rules today that will impact Arizona recruiting. There are certainly programs who count on satellite camps more than the Wildcats do, but Arizona has certainly made good use of them. However, today the NCAA decided they will be no more and programs will only be allowed to hold camps on their respective campuses and "regular" facilities. That means UA will no longer be able to take its staff to a high school campus in California and host numerous recruits for the camp.

UA has not put all of its recruiting on satellite camps but a guy like Lorenzo Burns is a prospect who benefitted from a camp like this. Arizona asked to have him go to a satellite camp and he did, performed well then picked up an offer. It also makes it more difficult for a recruit who doesn't have the means to get out on an unofficial visit to Tucson. It would give prospects like that a chance to get to know the staff a little closer to home.

The rule also forbids members of the coaching staff from leaving campus to go work a camp as well. There are certain camps that single coaches would attend and help run that put them right in front of recruits. For example Charlie Ragle worked one in Hawaii last year and Jim Michalczik worked one in California where there are coaches from multiple schools working as camp coaches.

Arizona does not do a ton of its recruiting through satellite camps, but they were part of the puzzle for UA. It was not something that was a secret that it was coming down the pipeline, so schools have been prepared for it. Arizona will have a bunch of stuff on campus this spring and summer to make up for not being able to the recruits with satellite camps.

In addition to that the NCAA deregulated electronic communication for recruits meaning coaches now have the freedom to text, snapchat, Facebook, etc. recruits. Snapchat is the real one where things could get very interesting because, if you're not familiar, the messages disappear afterward. Opening up a different can of worms.
