Last week USA Today released its yearly update to a database it has compiled of assistant coach salaries in college football. It is not surprising, but of the 10 public universities in the Pac-12 UA is last in terms of assistant coach salaries. When you run down the list the first Arizona coach to show up (Noel Mazzone - $600,000) is at No. 101 on the list.
In all, the Wildcats used $2,990,000 of the available $3,400,000 for the 10-man staff last year. Washington pays its assistant coaches the most in the conference with a total salary pool of $5,940,048. UW defensive coordinator (and soon to be head coach) Jimmy Lake was the top-paid assistant in the league as he made $1,400,016 last year.
Here is a rundown of how much Arizona's assistants were paid including the three that were fired during the season – Marcel Yates, John Rushing and Iona Uiagalelei who are in bold.
1. Noel Mazzone (OC/QB) $600,000
2. Marcel Yates (DC/S) $560,000
3. Kyle Devan (OL) $275,000
4. Demetrice Martin (CB) $260,000
5. DeMarco Murray (RB) $235,000
6. Theron Aych (Slot) $235,000
7. John Rushing (LB) $225,000
8. Iona Uiagalelei (DL) $215,000
9. Taylor Mazzone (WR) $200,000
10. Jeremy Springer (S/T) $185,000
Strength coach Brian Johnson made $175,000 last year and that also ranks at the bottom of the conference among the 10 schools that have to report the salaries.
For a comparison, the top assistant in the country – LSU DC Dave Aranda – made $2,500,000 last year. Meanwhile, Iowa strength coach Chris Doyle as at the top of that list at $800,200.
None of this information is surprising, but it does once again give a clear picture of what the Wildcats are up against when looking for a new defensive coordinator and assistant coaches. It is just one of the things that has been part of the holdup in hiring replacements for the departed coaches.
Interestingly enough, the three schools at the bottom of the list all missed out on bowl games this year backing up just how important it is to spend money to have good football teams. One doesn't always equal another but Washington, Oregon and Utah are all among the top four in the conference in assistant coach salaries.
