Arizona could be landing its next quarterback today as three-star Washington-based signal caller Clay Millen is set to announce his commitment at 1 p.m. (MST) and he will decide between Arizona, Colorado, Oregon State and Indiana. Arizona has quietly had the momentum in his recruitment for a while, but a recent offer from Colorado certainly created a different situation.
Still, Arizona is trending today as Millen heads into his decision and as of now my expectation is that he will be picking the Wildcats when he makes his choice.
He had been waiting on an offer from LSU but that likely isn't going with the Tigers landing a four-star prospect at the position last month. Most of the other schools on the list have already added quarterbacks as well leaving Arizona with a path to land him.
There had been some previous speculation that Colorado was close to pulling off the commitment, but everything behind the scenes the last couple days points to Arizona being the spot.
Millen fits in well with what Noel Mazzone is looking for at the position being 6-foot-3 and a pro-style quarterback. He isn't someone who will immediately be a threat to Grant Gunnell either and that is important since the staff doesn't want to have another quarterback controversy at this stage. He will have some time to learn under Gunnell before eventually being in position to earn the starting job.
Quarterbacks tend to be among the earlier commits each year and that has again been the case in this recruiting cycle, but Millen opted to hold out hope that he could take some physical visits before making his decision but that has not happened and spots continue to fill up. As I have said previously, the Arizona staff has been putting some pressure on recruits to commit right now and I said earlier in the week that I wouldn't be surprised to see the Wildcats add a couple more commits before the end of the week.
Millen had hoped to see Arizona early in the spring in person but the recruiting dead period changed those plans.
“I kind of had a plan to be committed before my senior season, and ideally that will still happen,” Millen previously told Beavers Edge about his plans before the coronavirus hit. “If everything keeps getting pushed back, we will just kind of have to see what happens.”
It all comes to an end today and right now Arizona has built the momentum.
