The Arizona Wildcats closed out play at the Tony Gwynn Legacy on Sunday afternoon, falling to the University of San Diego, 5-3, at Fowler Park. The loss dropped Arizona to 4-3 on the season.
The Wildcats led 1-0 until the sixth inning when the Toreros erupted for three in the bottom half of the inning and then two more in the seventh.
Despite his second strong start of the season, left-hander Avery Weems was the tough luck loser for the Wildcats. The lefty went six innings, allowing just three hits. He allowed four runs, but only one was earned.
Weems cruised early, not allowing a hit until a leadoff single in the fifth inning. Weems allowed a walk in the second inning, but erased the base runner on a double play. In the third, he hit a batter, but again erased him on a double play.
The left-hander from Flagstaff allowed his first hit of the game in the fifth, but rolled his third double play of the game as the next batter, Garrett Calvert, hit into the third 4-6-3 double play of the game. Weems again hit the next batter, but got a ground out to escape the inning. Through five innings, he faced 16 batters, just one more than the minimum.
The Wildcats scratched their first run across in the fifth inning. Ryan Haug started it off with a hit by pitch and moved to second on a walk from Travis Moniot. Cal Stevenson also walked to load the bases with no outs. Alfonso Rivas hit into a sharp double play to score Haug and make it 1-0. The inning ended when Cameron Cannon lined out to third with a runner on third.
The Toreros took advantage of two Wildcat errors in the sixth inning to score three runs and grab a 3-1 lead. USD scored two more in the eighth to stretch the lead to 5-1. The Wildcats tried clawing back, scoring one in the eighth on an RBI double from Nick Quintana and another in the ninth on an RBI single from Cannon.
Arizona brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth, but couldn’t make anything happened and dropped a two-run decision. The Cats have now lost three games this season by a total of four runs.
Cannon led the way offensively, going 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI. Robby Medel had a solid outing in relief, tossing two hitless innings.
Arizona returns to action Tuesday back at Hi Corbett Field against New Mexico State. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
