Kendall Rogers from D1Baseball is reporting that Arizona infielder Dayton Dooney is leaving the program with a likely move to Central Arizona College. The whispers of Dooney leaving the Wildcats after two seasons have been going on for a while now, but now the move is becoming more official. The Poway, California native was a freshman All-American after making 40 starts for the Wildcats back in 2019 and finishing the year with a .323 batting average to go with 10 home runs, 14 doubles, 53 RBIs and 43 runs.
He had a solid summer last year in the Northwoods League but was off to a bit of a slow start this season hitting just .146 in 13 games for the Wildcats in the shortened 2020 season. Dooney had two triples, a home run, six runs scored and seven RBIs this year. Most of his production came in the first week of the season when he had six RBIs in three games against Albany.
Head coach Jay Johnson moved Dooney around a bit once again this year with the sophomore making three appearances at first base, one at third base and eight as a designated hitter. He played first base, second base and shortstop as a freshman.
