Nick Quintana, who started 58 of Arizona’s 59 games this season, was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball on Wednesday.
He’s Arizona’s first selection to the team since Bobby Dalbec in 2014. He was one of 14 third baseman selected to this year’s team.
Quintana had a solid rookie season for the Wildcats, batting .293 with 17 doubles, six home runs, 38 RBI and 42 runs scored in 58 games. He posted a .394 on-base percentage, drawing 33 walks, which was the third highest total on the team.
Quintana’s 17 doubles are the most by an Arizona freshman since current Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jett Bandy had 21 in 2009. His six home runs are the most since current Baltimore Orioles outfielder Joey Rickard had eight in 2010.
On the season, Quintana had 13 multiple-hit games, 11 multiple-RBI games and had the longest on-base streak of the season at 28 games. He also had a 10-game hitting streak at one point, tied for the second longest streak by a Wildcat this season.
The freshman was the Pac-12 Player of the Week after his first weekend of college baseball, where he went 7 for 11 in his first three college games with four doubles and six RBI.
Quintana will head to the prestigious Cape Cod League this summer to play for Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.
