Cameron Cannon had four hits, Nick Quintana hit his first home run of the season and the Arizona Wildcats topped Washington State 9-2 Sunday at Hi Corbett Field to win the series.
The Wildcats improved to 13-10 on the season and 2-4 in Pac-12 play. Washington State dropped to 5-14 and 1-5 in league.
The Cats set a season high in hits with 18 and got a strong start from junior right-hander Michael Flynn to secure the series win in front of 2,910 fans.
Flynn went a career-high 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and walking one, while striking out a career-high eight. He earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the year.
After leaving 24 men on base in the first two games of the series, the Wildcats saw their offense go right to work Sunday in the series finale. The Cats plated three runs in the first inning, scoring all three with two outs. Alfonso Rivas started the rally with a two-out single and moved up a base when Quintana followed with a single of his own.
Cesar Salazar then singled off the pitcher to score Rivas for the first run of the game. The next batter, freshman designated hitter Blake Paugh, doubled down the left field line for a two-out, two-run double to score Quintana and Salazar to make it 3-0.
The Cats kept the pressure on one inning later when they scored four more runs in the second. Ryan Haug and Jacob Blas started the inning with back-to-back singles and each moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from leadoff man Cal Stevenson.
Haug scored on a wild pitch and Blas moved up to third. Cannon laced a double to score Blas. Two batters later, Quintana hit his first home run of the season over the wall in left field for a two-run shot to make it 7-0 in favor of the Cats.
The Cougars got one run back in the fifth on a solo home run from right fielder JJ Hancock. An inning later, the Cats stretched the lead back to seven. Quintana provided the run-scoring hit yet again with a single to score Cannon, who singled earlier in the inning.
The two teams traded runs in the seventh. Washington State got its run on an RBI single from Ryan Ramsower. Arizona answered with an RBI triple from Cannon for his fourth hit of the game. He scored Stevenson, who singled one batter earlier to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
Cannon finished 4 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored with a triple and a double. Quintana and Rivas each went 3 for 5, and Salazar was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Salazar extended his on-base streak to 21 games, having reached base in every game he’s played in this season.
Right-handers Zach Stone and Jonathan Guardado tossed 2 2/3 hitless innings in relief of Flynn.
The Wildcats return to action Thursday night against Nicholls State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., as the two teams will open a three-game nonconference series at Hi Corbett.
