The Washington Huskies used a four-run seventh inning to break open a tight game and top the Arizona Wildcats 7-1 Friday night at Husky Ballpark in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.
Arizona trailed 3-1 heading to the seventh, but the Huskies plated four on five hits and took advantage of one Arizona error to grab the lead it would never give back.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Arizona and dropped the Wildcats to 10-7 on the season and 0-1 in Pac-12 play. Washington, who had lost five of its last six, improved to 8-8 and 1-0 in the league.
Arizona managed to strike first Friday and take an early lead, plating a run in the first inning before starter Cody Deason even took the mound. Mitchell Morimoto walked to lead off the game and moved to second on a base hit from Cal Stevenson. Ryan Haug then dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up a base.
After an Alfonso Rivas walk loaded the bases, Nick Quintana lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Morimoto and make it 1-0.
Deason worked a perfect first inning, and then struck out the side in the second inning. His second strikeout of the evening marked his 100th career strikeout as a Wildcat.
The Huskies got to Deason in the third, scoring one run and tying the game at one apiece. Leadoff hitter Mason Cerrillo doubled with two outs to score Ben Baird and tie the game.
Deason tossed a scoreless fourth, but the Huskies again got to him in the fifth for two runs. With two on and two outs, Cerrillo singled to left to score one run and then a throwing error by Haug allowed the second run to score to make it 3-1.
Deason got the first out in the sixth, but then exited for freshman Josh Haley, who came on to get a double play to get out of the inning and keep it a two-run deficit. But Arizona couldn’t take advantage, and the Huskies then had their big inning in the seventh to create situation.
Fraizer and Stevenson each had two hits in the loss, with both of Fraizer’s hits being doubles. Cesar Salazar singled in the game and has reached base safely in all 15 games he’s appeared in this season.
The Wildcats and Huskies continue their three-game series Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. Left-hander Randy Labaut will be opposed by Washington lefty Lucas Knowles.
