Cameron Ming tossed his second complete game in his last three starts Friday to lift the Arizona Wildcats to a 3-1 win over Arizona State at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The junior left-hander, who went to high school in the Phoenix area at Sandra Day O’Connor High School, went all nine innings, scattering six hits, and allowing one run. He struck out three and walked two in 109 pitches. He improved to 7-1 on the season and lowered his season ERA to 2.09.
Ming has tossed a complete game in each of his last two conference starts. He also went the distance on May 6 versus Washington in a 3-1 win. His effort helped the Wildcats improve to 35-17 on the season and 14-12 in Pac-12 play. Arizona State fell to 23-28 and 8-18 in the league.
Just like Thursday’s series opener, neither team scored in the first three innings. Like they did in the opener, the Wildcats broke the deadlock in the fourth inning with a run. Catcher Ryan Haug, making his fourth straight start for the Cats, doubled to centerfield to open the inning. He moved up a base when designated hitter Cory Voss singled up the middle.
With runners on the corners and no outs, third baseman Nick Quintana hit into a 4-6-3 double play, but Haug scored on the play to give Arizona an early lead. Kyle Lewis and Louis Boyd followed with back-to-back hits off ASU starter Ryan Hingst to put two on, but Arizona stranded them to end the inning.
Ming worked around a two-out single in the bottom half of the inning to post a zero and preserve the lead for the Wildcats. That remained the score until Arizona State finally got to Ming in the sixth inning. Third-place hitter Hunter Bishop opened the inning with a double down the right field line and moved to third on a groundout from Lyle Lin. The next batter, Zach Cerbo lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Bishop and even the score at one apiece.
The Wildcats didn’t waste any time responding to Arizona State’s run with a pair of their own in the seventh. Boyd and Cal Stevenson started the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with no outs for Oliva. The junior centerfielder reached on an RBI fielder’s choice to shortstop to score Boyd.
Oliva then stole second to move into scoring position for Alfonso Rivas. Rivas walked and Oliva moved to third on a wild pitch on ball four to the left fielder. JJ Matijevic plated Oliva when he reached on an RBI fielder’s choice to third base to make it 3-1, which capped the scoring in the inning. The RBI was Matijevic’s 60th this season, making him the first Arizona player to drive in 60 or more in a season since 2012 when Rob Refsnyder (66) and Seth Mejias-Brean (61) each reached the 60-RBI mark.
Oliva went 1 for 5 with his 24th double of the season in the win. He’s second on the team in doubles to Matijevic, who has 26. The 50 combined doubles are the most ever by a pair of Arizona teammates in the same season. The duo also became the first set of teammates in Wildcats history to each record 24 or more doubles in the same season.
Boyd went 2 for 4 in the win with a run scored. Matijevic finished 1 for 3 with an RBI. Lingos took the loss for Arizona State, falling to 6-6 on the season.
Arizona will aim to sweep the series Sunday when sophomore right-hander Cody Deason makes his eighth start of the season. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
